The Synod on Synodality is a two-year process of listening and dialogue beginning with a solemn opening in Rome on October 9 and 10, 2021 with each individual diocese and church celebrating the following week on October 17. The synodal process will conclude in 2023.
Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has risen to this call by creating a process for every person to be invited to a listening session.
These will begin with a Gospel reading for focus and guided by general question prompts, with people discussing their thoughts in small groups. Freedom and openness for attendees to speak, charitably, and to be heard is the ultimate goal. The themes that emerge in each group at each session will be anonymously recorded and submitted to the Archdiocese, which will gather such input from each parish for Archbishop Perez to discuss in Rome.
In addition to the Pope wanting to hear from us, Archbishop Perez is very excited about this opportunity to hear from the diverse flock under his care!
In addition, the Archdiocese has created an assessment survey, called the Discipline Maker Index, for each parish. St. Luke's can be found here. This survey will be available until April 4, 2022, and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and all are encouraged to take it, but especially those who cannot attend an in-person listening session.
St. Luke’s Parish will hold listening sessions to which all are invited and welcome.
